As part of World Refugee Day today, Australia for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s charity in Australia, announced the appointment of former Vietnamese refugee and author Carina Hoang as a Special Representative.

Carina was the keynote speaker at Australia for UNCHR’s World Refugee Day breakfast in Sydney today, where she shared her moving story with over 300 people.

“When I was 16 years old, I escaped Vietnam on a wooden boat with my two siblings and 370 other people. We endured violent storms, pirate raids and severely unsanitary conditions to make it to Indonesia, only to find ourselves stranded on an uninhabited island for almost three months until we were rescued by the UNHCR,” Carina said.
